The temple rose from the jungle like a dream, its stone carvings glowing in the afternoon light. I'd come to Tana Toraja seeking something I couldn't name — a feeling, a memory, a reason. The locals spoke of the Aluk To Dolo, the Way of the Ancients, and how the spirits of the dead still walked among the living. I'd come to see if it was true.

I'd been wrong to doubt.

The air here was thick, heavy with the scent of frangipani and damp earth, and when I stepped into the temple courtyard, the world shifted. The light changed, golden and thick as honey, and for a moment I saw them — the ancestors, the spirits, their faces etched in stone and air and memory.

Then they were gone, and I was alone, standing before a figure that had not been there before.

A man. Tall, dark-haired, his skin the color of polished teak, his eyes ancient and knowing. He wore a sarong and a sash of woven gold, and around his neck hung a pendant that pulsed with a soft, inner light.

"You've come far," he said, and his voice was the rustle of palm fronds, the whisper of water over stone.

"I didn't know I was coming," I admitted.

He smiled, and it was like the sun breaking through clouds. "The land knows. It brings those who need to remember."

"Remember what?"

"That you are part of this place. That the spirits are not gone, only changed. That love — true love — never ends."

He told me his name was Wayan, and he was the guardian of this temple, the keeper of the old ways. He'd been here for centuries, watching the seasons turn, tending the spirits, waiting for someone like me.

"Someone who can see," he said. "Someone who can feel the veil between worlds."

I thought of the dreams I'd been having, the feeling of being pulled toward this place, toward him. The way my chest ached when I closed my eyes, as if something were calling me home.

"I've been dreaming of you," I said, and the words felt true even as I spoke them.

He reached for me then, his hand cupping my cheek, and I felt the warmth of him, the strength in his touch. His thumb brushed my lower lip, and I shivered, not from cold but from the sudden awareness of his presence, the way he filled the space around me.

"I've been waiting," he said, and his voice was rough, as if the words had been waiting too long to be spoken.

The jungle seemed to close around us, the frangipani blooms falling like snow, and when he kissed me, I felt the world tilt. His lips were soft, demanding, and when his tongue slipped between mine, I gasped, my hands gripping his shoulders as he pulled me closer.

He tasted of spice and smoke and something ancient, something that had been here long before either of us. His hands moved to my waist, then lower, and when his fingers brushed the bare skin of my hip, I arched into him, my body responding to his touch as if it had known this moment all along.

He led me to the edge of the courtyard, where the jungle grew thick and dark, and there, beneath a canopy of frangipani, he laid me down on a bed of fallen petals. The light filtered through the leaves, golden and dappled, and I felt like I was dreaming.

His hands moved over my body, slow and deliberate, as if memorizing every curve, every line. When he stripped my clothes, he did it with reverence, as if I were something sacred, something to be worshipped. And when he kissed the skin of my stomach, my chest, the inside of my thighs, I felt the ghosts of a hundred lovers, the echoes of a hundred touchings, and I knew — this was not just him. This was all of them. This was the land, the spirits, the ancestors, all pouring into me through him.

When he entered me, I cried out, not from pain but from the sheer fullness of it, the way my body opened for him as if it had been waiting. His thrusts were slow, deep, each one hitting a place inside me that had been hollow for years, and I felt the spirits around us, watching, approving, blessing.

He came inside me, his body shuddering, his cry a sound of release and gratitude and love, and I held him close, feeling his heart hammer against mine, feeling the weight of him, the reality of him.

When he pulled out, I saw the blood on his fingers, the evidence of my first time, and I knew then that this was no ordinary love. This was something older, something sacred.

"You are marked now," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Bound to this place, to me, to the spirits."

I touched my stomach, feeling the warmth spreading from where he'd come, and I felt the land around me, the temple, the jungle, all alive and watching.

"I want to stay," I said.

He smiled, and it was like the sun breaking through clouds. "You never left."

And as the spirits danced around us, as the frangipani fell like snow, I knew he was right. This was home. This was love. This was forever.
